Abstract
Computing history is full of families: sons who finished their fathers’ machines, sons who bet the family company and won (or lost), couples who founded companies and research schools, and one dynasty that runs from Boolean logic to deep learning. This page collects the kinship stories scattered across the encyclopedia, grouped by pattern, each with a link to the article where the full story lives.
Completing the Work
Henry Prevost Babbage, Charles Babbage’s youngest surviving son, published his father’s scattered papers as Babbage’s Calculating Engines (1889) and had a demonstration piece of the Analytical Engine’s mill built from the original drawings; in 1910 it computed and printed multiples of pi, the closest the Engine ever came to running. → Charles Babbage: The Visionary Architect

Re-betting the Company
Thomas Watson Jr. took over IBM from his father in 1956 and bet twice the company’s annual revenue ($5 billion) on the System/360, the largest bet-the-company decision in the industry’s history. It won him the mainframe age. His memoir is titled Father, Son & Co. → IBM: The Company
Adriano Olivetti inherited his father Camillo’s typewriter factory and re-bet it on electronics: the transistorized Elea 9003 mainframe (1959) made Italy briefly competitive with IBM. His death in 1960 unmade the bet; the division was sold to General Electric in 1964. → Camillo and Adriano Olivetti

Failed Succession
Fred Wang was installed as president of Wang Laboratories by his father An Wang in 1986, over the visible dismay of the professional executives. Losses mounted; in 1989 the dying founder personally fired his son, and the company was bankrupt within three years. → Dead End: Wang Labs

The Paradigm Flip
Jakob Uszkoreit co-authored “Attention Is All You Need” (2017), the Transformer paper that made obsolete much of the rule-based language technology his father Hans Uszkoreit had spent four decades building; the skeptics of self-attention included his own father. The Inverted Case: Son Builds for Father

From Boole to Hinton: George Boole, whose 1847 algebra of logic underlies all digital computation, is the great-great-grandfather of Geoffrey Hinton, whose backpropagation work underlies deep learning.
